

What is P-16?
P-16 is the shorthand term for a student-focused, comprehensive and integrated
system that links all education levels from preschool (P) through the senior
year of college (16). It is a powerful framework for policymakers to use to
improve teaching and learning and thus better prepare students for living,
learning and working in a changing world.
P-16 Goals
The Tennessee P-16 Council, a public/private partnership evolved from the Tennessee Commission on Education Quality (also a public/private sector partnership) and is focused on key education improvement initiatives and public awareness of the link between an educated citizenry and a healthy economy. The work of the Tennessee P-16 Council will improve student achievement by getting children off to a good start, raising academic standards, conducting appropriate assessments, improving teacher quality and generally smoothing student transitions from one level of learning to the next. Local Councils
Local councils mirror the state council at the community level. They include local education, business and community leaders who represent major stakeholders in education and are committed to increasing dramatically the success rates of all students, pre-kindergarten through college. Local councils may be made up of representatives from one county or multiple counties working together
Tennessee P-16 Network
Local Councils that submit a petition of recognition to the Tennessee P-16 Council are invited to participate in the Tennessee P-16 Network. The purpose of the network is to build communication linkages and bring representatives of local councils together to share ideas, issues and best practices, The network holds quarterly meetings and planning sessions aligned with state council meetings. At state council meetings, the network presents issues and ideas for consideration by the Tennessee P-16 Council.
